Apolo, since its beginnings, has had the participation of both reserch groups' members and undergraduate students, who are specifically chosen to learn about high performance and parallel computing in order to build their careers. This turned out to be an immense advantage when Purdue University sent Universidad EAFIT an invite to take part in the 2014 Supercomputing competition. Since there were already students with some of the abilities, knowledge and training needed to tackle this kind of challenges, EAFIT was able to send a well rounded team whose performance was more than enough to assure future invitations to other Supercomputing competitions around the world.
These competitions began with 2007's first
Student Cluster Competition in Reno, NV with the sole objective to immerse both high school and undergraduate students into the world of HPC (High Performance Computing). The events involves a number of international teams competing in a non-stop 48 hour challenge in which they design and build small clusters in order to complete a real world scientific workload.
